CSAR Bulletin issued in November 2002

LSF

The transition from NQE to LSF is well under way, with over 200 cpus on Green being devoted to LSF from 5 November. This is being increased as users migrate from NQE to LSF. If you wish to submit a job requesting more cpus than currently available via LSF on Green, please contact us.

Users should find the transition to LSF straightforward. A conversion tool is available, and a User Guide has been issued. Please see link here to LSF Userguide. If additional assistance with the transition is required, please contact the CSAR Service.

XCP

The new version of xcp is now available on all systems.

There have been many changes in recent months of the infrastructure of disk resources on the CSAR machines that it has necessitated the modification of xcp.

Care has also been taken to use the most efficient and the most friendly copying method available for all types of transition. Copying large files does have an impact on other things running on the system. Using xcp to copy large files reduces this to a negligible effect.

Please see the man page for further information, and please use xcp rather than cp for all large file transfers.

Turing: Programming Environment Update

The latest Cray Programming Environment, PrgEnv 3.6, is now available on Turing. This includes cf90.3.6.0.1, CC.3.6.0.1, craytools.3.6.0.0 and craylibs.3.6.0.0

These new versions will become the defaults on Turing on Tuesday 10th December.

Users are urged to test the new versions, which may be accessed via the module switch command, eg

module switch PrgEnv PrgEnv.36

There are a number of enhancements particularly with Fortran, C and C++ in this release.

On the same date, some very old modules will be withdrawn. These include all versions prior to the following:

  • CC.3.3.0.0
  • PrgEnv.33
  • cf90.3.3.0.0
  • craylibs.3.3.0.0
  • craytools.3.3.0.0
  • mpt.1.3.0.5

Users should not be using these very old versions but if this presents any problem they should contact the CSAR helpdesk immediately. Any problems with the new software should also be reported to the CSAR helpdesk.

Turing: ssh upgrade

There will be a minor upgrade of ssh on turing on Tuesday 26 November. Users should not be affected by the change. The new version is currently running on port 99 if you wish to verify it (ssh -p 99 turing.cfs.ac.uk).
