Computer Services for Academic Research (CSAR) is a National High Performance Computing (HPC) service for the UK run on behalf of the Research Councils by the Computation for Science (CfS) consortium.

Research

The supercomputers at CSAR are used by researchers across the UK to underpin their world class science and engineering research. Areas of research include : Aerodynamics and other Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Materials Science, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics and Computational Biochemistry, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Numerical Linear Algebra, Environmental Sciences, including weather and climate predictions. Some current research projects supported by CSAR are highlighted in our Research section.

Supercomputers

CSAR provides High Performance Computing facilities and expertise to UK researchers. Current capability supercomputers at CSAR are:

  • Newton - an SGI Altix 3700 system with 512 Itanium2 processors.
  • Green - an SGI Origin 3800 system with 512 MIPS processors.

CSAR also provides other Origin systems for batch and interactive access, flexible data storage and work space, a range of scientific software, training and support.
