Applying for CSAR Resources

Please note as the CSAR service is due to end on 30th June 2006, with the exception of NERC, participating Research Councils will no longer accept grant proposals requesting time on the CSAR facility as of 30th June 2005.

The information detailed below is for academic use funded directly by EPSRC , BBSRC , PPARC or NERC . For other users (academic research with other funding, or commercial users) please contact the helpdesk in the first instance.

Classes of Application

Class 1 projects obtain major resources by applying to the appropriate Research Council for the research. Applications will then go through the normal peer review process.

Applications should be made using your Research Council's research grant form along with the CSAR Application for National Supercomputing Resources (CSAR06-06-03) form. Your case for support should include details of your scientific project and justify your requirement for the chosen resources. Please note that the application process can take several months.

Class 2 projects are limited to 100 Generic Service Tokens and to 6 months. They are used for 'pump-priming' to test the suitability of particular applications before they become Class 1.

Applications for Class 2 projects should be made on the CSAR Application for National Supercomputing Resources (CSAR06-06-03) form, with a half to one page case for support, and sent directly to Manchester Computing.

Class 3 projects are limited to 500 Generic Service Tokens and to 1 year. They are specifically aimed at research groups new to HPC (for example in the medical, biological and social sciences).

Applications for Class 3 projects should be made on the CSAR Application for National Supercomputing Resources (CSAR06-06-03) form, with a half to one page case for support, and sent directly to Manchester Computing.
