e-Science

Introduction

The term e-Science is widely used and may have a wide number of different interpretations. In the long term the objective may be to carry out large scale scientific researc through distributed global collaborations enabled by the Internet. However the work described here is focused on that carried out under the UK e-Science Programme and associated with the CSAR service.

Details of examples are given below.

Example 1: SAMD (Seamless Access to Multiple Datasets)

SAMD was a demonstartor project for EPSRC. The project pooled together resources from various areas of the University of Manchester to show that data and computational resources could be harnessed in a grid environment to the benefit of the researchers.
